As the Japan Cup commenced, organizers faced a daunting challenge posed by inclement weather. Originally intended to span 16 laps of the Utsunomiya circuit with a climb up Mt. Kogashi, the total distance amounted to 164.8 kilometers. However, due to adverse weather conditions, the race was modified, cutting down to 13 laps and 133.9 kilometers.

The shortened distance didn’t deter the riders from launching a fiercely competitive battle right from the starting line. With the riders knowing that every moment counted, it became a relentless fight for position and strategy.

Costa’s extraordinary display of skill and determination allowed him to break away on the 12th lap, securing the last set of mountain points. However, his lead was short-lived as Guillaume Martin and Felix Engelhardt joined him, setting the stage for a nail-biting finale.
