“It’s the windiest day in history. There’s no way this is safe!” exclaimed Manchester United legend Gary Neville as he walked up to Anfield with fellow mate Jamie Carragher. The two Englishmen were set to abseil down the side of Anfield as part of the Overlap on Tour series, premiering on Sky Sports.

Their descent began at a height of 36 meters, with all security and safety measures in place. The two also had trackers attached to their bodies in order to monitor heart rates and overall condition. Gary Neville’s nerves were showing, but Jamie was in high spirits.
Strong winds and even stronger rivalry
“I’m comforted that I’m not being sort of being pushed over the edge by someone from Liverpool,” said Neville as the instructor guided the two on what exactly would happen. She also mentioned that the activity is not a race or competition, but the two were quick to dismiss the possibility of that happening and were eager to get it over with.
The banter between the two arch-nemesis was on full display, with Carragher particularly taking a jab at Neville’s heart rate, which was a whopping 100. After learning the crew members were not from Liverpool, Neville’s nerves were at ease. Carragher was rearing to go, even explaining the science and dynamics behind the activity, a man in total control of his surroundings. The duo’s spirits were high as they made their way to the point of descent but were shivering with nervousness inside.

As he began his slow descent, Neville finally shook off his fears. While he abseiled down, he noticed the Liverpool badge with the famous quote “You’ll never walk alone.” Neville did not miss the chance to take a dig at the Liverpool chant. He shouted, “You’ll never walk alone??, I f****ng am!“.
Carragher cannot use the Liverpool advantage
To everyone’s surprise, Neville was the first one to begin as Carragher’s feet all but froze as he watched him climb down. “What am I doing here? This isn’t even the Jamie Carragher Overlap, it’s the Gary Neville overlap!” said Carragher as he contemplated whether to take the climb or ease back up. Neville started slow but quickly got into his groove as he climbed on, egging on his mate and engaging in some beautiful, friendly banter. He laughed loudly and Carragher could only watch from the platform. Neville completed the 36 meters descent with ease, and Carragher finally followed suit. After a long and nervous climb, he finally reached the top, questioning his decision the whole time.
