The lengths Viktor Hovland has gone to have a better swing are certainly unbelievable. But would you call him a “psychopath”? Not many can match the Norwegians’ dedication and passion for the sport. Right now, Hovland’s trajectory for improvement might seem insane to many, but everyone has seen a certain G.O.A.T. take the same path and change the history of golf. Only time will tell whether or not the 27-year-old can replicate the same success. Just like Tiger Woods back in the day, Viktor Hovland is now finding himself being ridiculed for his relentless drive to improve.

Rising Korn Ferry Tour, Nick Shipley, star recently spoke about the 7x PGA Tour winner. Like Hovland, Shipley has also tasted victory recently in the LECOM Suncoast Classic 2025. He joined the team of Skratch for an episode of On The Bag with Dan Rapaport titled ‘How Low Can Neal Shipley Go at His Home Course?’. In the video that lasted over an hour, one of the segments had the famed analyst ask Shipley about his thoughts on Viktor Hovland and his win a few weeks ago.

The young golfer immediately mentioned how he has heard the PGA Tour pro being a “psychopath” when it comes to his swing. Rapaport confirmed that Hovland himself admits to being a psychopath when it comes to his strokeplay. That’s when Shipley mentioned, “To be honest, a lot of us are psychopaths and do crazy stuff. It doesn’t shock me that he could be thinking that and play so well. He is such a talented guy!” The Korn Ferry Tour pro admitted that the top golfers are expected to act like “psychopaths” if they want to be successful. Hovland and other top golfers are pushing their limits to achieve results more consistently.

Speaking of winning, Shipley justified the PGA Tour pro’s drastic approach with his success on the course. “He’s won a ton,” said the 24-year-old before Rapaport confirmed that Hovland has 7 career victories. “You don’t do that without being really talented,” clarified Shipley before pointing out how old Viktor Hovland’s putter is. That is the one thing he hasn’t thought of changing, as it has been working incredibly well for him.

Despite bad form, Hovland was still able to break his losing streak of two years a few weeks ago. However, the 27-year-old has had quite a challenging season otherwise. Let’s take a look at his 8 appearances so far to understand how he has fared.

Viktor Hovland’s form in 2025

Yes, he may have won the 2025 Valspar Championship, but Viktor Hovland has still had a terrible season. Out of the eight appearances in 2025, he has only made 5 cuts. He missed important weekend rounds of the Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and THE PLAYERS Championship. Moreover, apart from winning at the Copperhead Course, Hovland hasn’t had any other top 10 finishes in 2025. One could even consider his Valspar Championship as a fluke.

When it comes to his season statistics, Hovland has one of the worst average driving distances on the PGA Tour. He is ranked 109th with an average of 298.7 yards. That has pushed him down the rankings in strokes gained from the tee as well. He’s ranked 81st in the league for that. Hovland’s approach shots outside 100 yards are among the very worst on the Tour. He’s ranked at 137th in that list. His short game stats for the season are terrible, as he has ranked 129th or worse in nearly all categories. The only saving grace for Hovland has been putting, which has been among the best and highest ranked on the PGA Tour.
