India’s tour of Sri Lanka will be Virat Kohli’s first proper assignment as the test skipper but it seems as if he already has a few hiccups to deal with even before the commencement of the series. The touring side might have to deal with a major blow in the form of injury to ace opener Murali Vijay who is struggling with a hamstring niggle and has little time to prove his fitness for the first test at Galle.

If the star opener fails to recover in time, it is likely that Lokesh Rahul will open alongside Shikhar Dhawan in the first test. Rahul has already shown glimpses of being a classy player by scoring a ton against the Aussies in their own backyard.

India will surely miss the services of one of their most reliable test players if Vijay fails to recover in time. He has proved his mettle time and again in all conditions. Be it South Africa, England, Australia or even New-Zealand, he has not let the team down anywhere.

Virat Kohli praised him heavily and termed him as a vital cog in the Indian set up. “In Test matches he has been a very solid opener for us, especially after the pair of Sehwag and Gambhir that we had, he is the one who has given us lot of stability at the top of the order. The best thing about him is that he is mentally very strong,” Kohli told bcci.tv.
