Liverpool are all set to sign former Barcelona no 1. Victor Valdes in the month of October after having his contract ran down at the club. Valdes 32, is currently sidelined due to a cruciate ligament injury and hence he and Liverpool both will have to wait for the transfer to happen on official bases until he totally cures from the injury and is ready for the medical at Anfield. Valdes was going to sign for French runners up Monaco but the deal failed due to the ligament injury.
Rodgers saw summer transfer targets Michel Worm and Alex McCarthy land in Tottenham and QPR respectively. Goalkeeper was the only area where Brendan Rodgers failed to invest in this summer transfer window. This failure certainly shall turn into success as the arrival of the Valdes is looking imminent.
The signing will see Mignolet get some good competition but at the same time Valdes will prove to be a great mentor for him. Liverpool’s current Belgian goalkeeper signed from Sunderland last season and has only 1 year of playing experience at a club of Liverpool’s stature. Mignolet is a very good goalkeeper but at the same time holds the reputation to be a bit inconsistent in his performances. While qualifying in the Champions League this season such kind of inconsistency would prove very costly for the entire club and so Valdes could step in to solve this kind of problem as he is vastly experienced and has also served for around 12 years for one of the most successful club Barcelona.
It seems as though the acquisition of Valdes is going to flourish at Anfield and both the goalkeepers will be given satisfactory no. of games.
