Fernando Alonso will be starting 5th on his Indy 500 debut this Sunday, the 28th of May. His initial goal was to just get into the top 9 and to be able to fight for the super pole. Fernando feels any position in the first three rows would’ve satisfied him.

On qualifying day, during warm up practice Mclaren-Honda-Andretti found something wrong with Alonso’s engine. With not a lot of time to fix the issue, the team decided to replace the engine just in time for qualifying. But surely, Alonso is quite used to such engine changes.

Most of the F1 grid will be closely following the Spaniard’s progress at the IMS, and so will Max Verstappen who said, “Of course, I look at how he is doing. I knew that Fernando will be strong. It was clear from the start that he would be good, he is a multiple World Formula 1 champion. And if you have a good feeling for racing, it does not really matter which car you are sitting in. If he were to compete in the Rallycross series, he would be fast.”

Max himself would be looking to put up a good show at the event that Alonso is missing. Max has never finished a race in Monaco. Both years he’s taken part in the Monaco Grand Prix, it’s always been a DNF for Max and he now feels he’ll surely change that statistic this weekend, he said, “We try to stay away from the barriers around the track. Qualifying is very important here, Since it is relatively easy in the race to defend your position.”
