Valorant is one of the most impressive eSports titles out there right now. In terms of the balance between the gameplay elements and the effective anti-cheat system, Riot Games has done pretty impressive work with this title. Riot has been pushing this title hard in order to build a competitive ecosystem for Valorant, which would even stand to rival that of League of Legends. All the steps the company takes for the title seem to be in that direction.

Currently, the state of competitive gameplay in Valorant seems to be in pretty good shape. Many in the community even consider this to be the next CS: GO. This might be true, in a way, given that the majority of the Valorant community includes former CS: GO players. However, unlike the latter, devs at Riot have been trying hard to make the game better with each passing update.

Recently, Riot released the 2.08 update patch for Valorant, which includes a new map and a new competitive gameplay element.

The latest addition to the Valorant map rotation, Breeze, features wide-open spaces, which makes it a sniper’s paradise. Much like Icebox, the layout of Breeze makes it one of the biggest maps in the game and is a shift from the simple multiple-lane layout. Set on a remote tropical island, Breeze is also one of the most beautiful maps in the game. Looks like it is quite different from the maps we have in the game.

Furthermore, Riot has also added a Breeze-only Unrated queue, which will be available for two weeks. However, during these two weeks, the map will not be available in the standard Unrated or Competitive queues.

In addition to this, the update has added a major competitive gameplay element. The 2.08 update patch has introduced a new feature called ‘Coach Slot’. The official patch notes state:

We’re very excited to introduce Coach slots to Tournament Mode games! This is only the beginning of our work on Coaches, and while functionality will be limited to start, we have plans to expand the capabilities available to coaches during a match. We look forward to evolving the role of coaches and working on this feature in partnership with coaches from the VCT ecosystem.

These are the functions of the Coach Slot:

  • Coaches can spectate Tournament Mode games and are locked to observing the team chosen in the custom game lobby.
  • However, they cannot use Map Pings, Team Chat, or Voice Chat in-game.
  • Coaches can use All Chat and Party Chat to allow for cases where they may need to communicate with a Tournament Moderator.
  • Coaches can pause a match in cases where that functionality is allowed to players.

With the Coach Slot, looks like Riot is ready to shake things up in the state of competitive play in Valorant.
