In 2021, while preparing to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics, Shaun sat down for a remote interview with US Weekly. The Olympic gold medalist discussed his relationship with Nina Dobrev. Shaun also revealed how he struggled to maintain a long-distance relationship with Nina during the pandemic.
How Shaun White struggled to make love happen
“How will you deal with the long distance with your relationship?” the interviewer asked Shaun. The Olympic gold medalist said he and Nina had spent time apart during the pandemic. “That was probably one of the toughest things because I couldn’t get into Canada. I tried, I was turned around (by the authorities),” said Shaun.
He also said things got challenging because of worldwide lockdowns. However, even during the lockdown, Nina was shooting for a movie. “I mean she’s incredibly talented… even during, you know when the whole world was shut down she was actually shooting a movie up in Canada,” said the snowboarding legend.

However, Shaun revealed how the couple stayed in touch. Shaun said it was challenging, but the couple had “a nice little system of how to stay in touch,“. The X Games winner also said the key to maintaining a healthy relationship while staying apart was to make time for one another.
Shaun also said since the worldwide lockdowns had ended, the couple had made plans to meet. Nine and Shaun had planned to meet during the holidays and Christmas ahead of time so they could keep their schedules free. The Olympic gold medalist also said he would fly out to Nina if any emergency occurred.
Nina Dobrev once surprised the Olympic legend
During the interview, Shaun also revealed Nina could snowboard “really well”. While Shaun admitted he is not a good teacher, the Olympic gold medalist remembers being surprised by Nina’s skill on the snowboard. Once, the couple decided to snowboard together. However, Shaun didn’t check if Nina kept up until his run ended.
