Undoubtedly, this win for the soccer women will resonate through history, and other women’s sports will soon follow suit.
Becky Sauerbrunn credits Billie Jean King, Venus, and Serena Williams for paving the way
The long-running lawsuit between the US Women’s National Team and the USSF ended with a landmark settlement. Thus, the issue of equal pay between US men’s and women’s soccer is finally at rest.
The USSF agreed to pay $22 million to the women’s team, along with another $2 million to aid post-career goals. However, Becky Sauerbrunn wants the world to know that this triumph is not isolated to just the women soccer players.
A quick note on yesterday…truth is this work has spanned decades and generations; and not just within women’s soccer, but all women’s sports. We couldn’t have done any of this without the 99ers. Not without Venus, Serena and Billie Jean. Not without the @TheWNBPA and many more. https://t.co/E9KORkDecZ

“This work has spanned decades and generations,” Becky wrote on Twitter. “Not just within women’s soccer, but all women’s sports,” she continued.
Then, Sauerbrunn credited the 1999 women’s World Cup team, heralded in history for changing the sport forever. Furthermore, she also said this victory would have been impossible without players like Billie Jean King, Venus, and Serena Williams.
Jean King founded the Women’s Tennis Association, while Venus and Serena Williams were crucial in popularizing the sport for women across the world. It is no secret that thousands of female players have found inspiration in Venus and Serena Williams and consequently picked up a tennis racquet.
Sauerbrunn also lauded the union of WNBA players, who have always been committed to upholding the rights of women NBA players.
Sauerbrunn is excited about what’s to come
Becky followed up her tweet with another, expressing how “there’s more work to be done”. Nevertheless, she took this moment of victory and appreciated it, stating how she is “proud to be where we are today”.
