She set a remarkable win in the 5000m run, breaking and setting a new world record. She made history by clocking in a never-seen-before 14:00:21. Her commendable performance made the race exciting and worth watching. Post-match, the 26-year-old athlete was cheered with deafening applause. Likewise, Wanda Diamond League couldn’t stop themselves from praising the very deserving Tsegay after her legendary win.

The thrilling 5000m at Eugene Diamond League Finals

Gudaf Tsegay created a world record in the women’s 5000m by surpassing Kenyan athlete Faith Kipyegon’s record. set just 3 months prior in June. Faith had the mark of 14.05.20 and Tsegay brilliantly took it to 14.00.21. However, it wasn’t as easy as she pulled herself with all her strength in the race to achieve a place in history.

It was a tight race, the track and field enthusiasts were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Crossing the finishing line second was Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet, who clocked 14:05.92 which was her personal best. Initially, the Americans Sinclaire Johnson and Elise Cranny owned the field in the first 2000 meters.

Following them was Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom who in no time took the lead and did tremendous teamwork for Tsegay. With this, Tsegay and Chebet pulled through the 3000 meters in 8:26.03. After Haylom stepped off, it came down between Tsegay and Chebet. Tsegay owned the field with her pace while Chebet tried her best to catch up. Although she was strong enough to be matched, Tsegay ran with her motive clear with the World record.

It seemed like she fell off the world record wagon when she reached the 4000 meters mark, however, the champion stormed further and got back into the wagon in the last 200 meters, creating history.
