For a mother, there is nothing so tragic as getting the news of her child’s death. There are no words to describe her grief. However, if her child’s death results from someone else’s fault, that grief turns to anger. Sonia Crespo, a mother from Brooklyn, is going through these exact feelings today. She lost her son to peer pressure and the infamous trend of subway surfing.
Sonia is the mother to 14-year-old Briyan Crespo. His corpse was carried away from the rail bed at the Brooklyn Station. As they carried away his lifeless body, Briyan Crespo’s cell phone continued to ring. It was Sonia trying to reach her son.

She later reported to a Daily News reporter that Briyan was neither picking up his phone nor answering her text message. The boy was riding atop an L train going to Manhattan. He was accompanied by a friend Widinson Garcia. The duo was knocked against the tracks when the train entered the Bushwick-Aberdeen station before 2 p.m. Sonia later revealed that the boy’s friends were goading him to attempt the tragic task.
Briyan attended Intermediate School 93 in Ridgewood. He skipped school that day to hang out with his friends. He even promised his mother he would be back on time. The mother recalled Briyan saying, “We’re going to eat, and then I’ll come home.”
When he failed to return, Sonia became worried. She checked the location app and found that Briyan had not been where he had promised to be. Instead, he was in Bushwick. She wanted news about her son, and when the news finally came, it was not what she expected.

Briyan was going to graduate from the eighth grade in four days. The mother reported that he was a hardworking kid and a smart student. He would buy and sell shoes to make money. He was also planning to start working the following year to help out his family. Briyan wanted to grow up and become a detective. But all that will never be. The authorities are trying to dissuade young kids from taking such risks. With this recent tragedy, and with stricter regulations, the frequency of the incidents needs to recede.
