Michael Phelps, who holds more Olympic medals than any other American athlete, is speaking publicly for the first time about living with depression, anxiety, and thoughts of self-harm in order to raise awareness among other athletes and everyday people alike. Phelps even had post-Olympic despair following the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he felt aimless and didn’t know who he was. Even if he had had success, he ended up in this darkness. “Yeah, I had won a s*** ton of medals. I had a great career. Does it matter? I wasn’t happy with who I was?” in the documentary he said.

It was not until 2014, the year of his second DUI, that Phelps went to a professional, healing place. It was this event that would change his perspective, help him make peace with who he is, and address his inner demons. Afterward, he carried on in treatment getting his mental state up in a rehab centre in Arizona. Phelps told in an interview, “I knew that that’s what I needed and I was at the end of the road and I had to get help.”

This shows the importance of realizing the journey to better mental health is something you have to constantly work on. Therapy opens up a place to talk about how you genuinely do feel allowing room for self-acceptance and self-compassion. Phelps’ tale stands as a testament to the fact that mental health plays an undeniable role in your overall well-being and that seeking intervention and therapy can be life-changing on the road to mental wellness.
