The Olympic sport of surfing includes big-wave surfing, in which competitors navigate large, dangerous waves. There are just a few places on Earth where you may find waves as high as 80 feet. Teahupo’o, Tahiti, is a great place for novice large wave surfers since the waves start at a manageable 6.6 to 9.8 feet. However, the true difficulty of these waves comes into play when they reach heights of up to 23 feet. While riding big waves can be exhilarating, wipeouts almost guarantee that surfers will end up in the hospital with broken bones or even worse outcomes. A British surfer, age 39, was recently involved in such an incident.
Recent events in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, included a wipeout by British surfing superstar Tom Lowe. But the surfer has fought through his wounds and has some good news for his worried followers.

After a massive wipeout in Tahiti, British big-wave surfer Tom Lowe was hospitalized with six shattered ribs and an internal hemorrhage. On Friday, the British surfer was surfing the waves off the shore of Teahupo’o when he was thrown into the ocean headfirst. Because Lowe launched too late onto a large wave, he was thrown into the shallows, where he suffered multiple injuries. Sharp coral fragments scratched and bled into his flesh as he was tossed around. When the surfing star had a wipeout, the bystanders and other surfers at the spot acted quickly to get him to the hospital.
Lowe had undergone many operations, and he is finally stable. In his Instagram post, he describes the injury, saying, “After surgery, lung treatment, and a blood transfusion due to internal bleeding, a fractured scapula, and many broken ribs, I truly do feel lucky to have made it.” When Lowe saw his wife and daughter there with him at the hospital, he was overjoyed. He also thanks his supporters, saying, “I am completely overwhelmed and humbled by the generosity and kindness everyone has shown. Thank you for all your positive energy and thoughtful messages.”

Lowe also noted in the post that the surfer’s buddy, Greg Long, has started a GoFundMe to help pay for the surfer’s medical expenses since they are not covered by insurance. To further aid the surfer, we humbly ask that you check out his Instagram post.
