The death of Pedro Martins de Lima, 92, the ‘Father of Portuguese Surfing’ has sent shockwaves across the surfing community. A connection to the sea persisted throughout de Lima’s life. Even at 85 years old, he decided to take up kitesurfing after having spent years as Lightning Bolt’s official representative. While he was there, he saw surfing expand and explode in popularity, both at home and in other parts of the globe.

On September 14, 1930, de Lima was born in Lisbon to a family of accomplished horse riders. Underwater photography was an early interest, that introduced the young prodigy to surfing. In 1946, he fell in love with the sport, and the rest was history.

The death of the great surfer was met with widespread shock and grief in the surfing world. This news was uploaded on a Facebook page that goes by the name ‘Federação Portuguesa de Surf’. People from all across the surfing community were quick to express their sorrow in the post’s comments. While some reminisced about his surfing career, others thanked him for his wonderful stories.

Fans talked about de Lima’s contribution to surfing, and his other endeavors. One said, “Pleased to have your collaboration in the discussion of ideas on the performance of technical textiles in sports and especially in Surf. Such a brilliant personality! A hug to the family.”

Others remembered the surfing legend for his glorious surfing career, saying, “The father of the Portuguese surf.  Quickly adaptable to new times, would make anyone feel old. Condolences to the family but also congratulations on the legacy this man has left them. We all live a little bit of you!”

Another fan hopes that de Lima’s family is being strong during these hard times, saying, “An extraordinary person, with many adventures and stories always ready to tell. Rest in peace. A hug and comfort to his family at this time especially to his wife.”
