The Wallex US Open of Surfing has provided thrilling competition at the Huntington Beach Pier. For every surfer, from complete novice to seasoned pro, the Challenger Series is the first and foremost opportunity to show the world what they’re made of. Heat 8 of the Round of 64 featured a mix of inexperienced surfers and a seasoned veteran; however, Filipe Toledo, the current bearer of the yellow jersey in the Men’s Championship Tour, withdrew from the heat and was replaced by John Mel. Mateus Herdy, Michael Dunphy, and Griffin Colapinto’s brother, Crosby Colapinto, were the other surfers. These surfers gave the impression of a massive clash on the waves.
The American surfing competition included surfers from the United States and Brazil. Interestingly, the Huntington Beach Pier crowd was rooting for the Americans, but they had their sights set on Crosby Colapinto, Griffin’s brother. The American surfer performed well despite intense expectations from the home fans.

This WSL season, Griffin Colapinto has been particularly impressive in the Championship Tour tournaments. In addition to making it into the Rip Curl Finals in 2023, the American surfer will also be able to compete in the 2024 Olympics. The Colapinto brothers are held to the same high standards as the Florence brothers, two other great surfers, by the local audience. Crosby Colapinto opened the competition with a 7.50 on the first wave at the Huntington Beach Pier. His closest pursuers on the same wave were Mateus Herdy (6.00) and Michael Dunphy (4.23).

While the other surfers battled in the second wave of the American WSL event, Crosby Colapinto put on a display that surprised everyone. The 22-year-old surfing sensation cut back a couple of times on a little wave that seemed like it would be less than ideal. To the astonishment of everyone on the beach, including the judges, he kept doing cutbacks until the wave was gone. The American surfing superstar got a perfect score from the judges, an 8.17, and won the heat. With a score of 15.67, Crosby Colapinto moved through to the Round of 32 in the Wallex US Open of Surfing, giving American surf fans more of Griffin’s sibling’s brilliance.

Colapinto recorded a solid 7.17 in the first wave of the 9-wave match, while Pupo struggled through the waves. The Brazilian surfer did a 7.00 on the fourth wave, coming close to equaling the American’s score. However, there were still more waves to come, so the war was far from over. On the next wave, Pupo scored a 7.57, while Colapinto could only manage a 6.17. There were no more waves for either surfer to ride, and Pupo was declared the winner and moved on to the finals. The American surfer had one of his greatest performances of the 2023 WSL season in the Australian tournament, where he placed third overall.
