The 2023 WSL season is almost finished. Before the Rip Curl Finals, the Tahiti Pro is the last stop on the Championship Tour. Some surfers are already at Teahupo’o, Tahiti, in French Polynesia, getting ready for one of the major surfing tournaments as the rest of the world makes its way there. One of the surfers who has already qualified for the forthcoming Rip Curl Finals is Caroline Marks, who now sits at #3 on the Women’s Championship Tour. However, this hasn’t stopped the 21-year-old American surfer from starting her training in the treacherous Teahupo’o waves.

The WSL’s official social media account shared Caroline Marks’ practice session. A lot of people took notice of this online since the qualified surfer clearly wasn’t going to let the Tahitian event pass without a surf battle.

Located on the southwestern coast of Tahiti in French Polynesia in the South Pacific, there’s the settlement of Teahupo’o. The waves at this surf break are massive, easily topping the heads of even the largest surfers. This creates some really rough waves, yet surfers who master them are held in high regard. The next event of the World Surf League (WSL) season is being held at Teahupo’o, which is also the venue of the 2024 Olympics. Although Caroline Marks has already qualified for the Rip Curl Finals, she is still focused on improving her surfing on the waves in Tahiti, as shown in an Instagram video WSL posted recently.

Marks begins the video by carefully balancing herself on the crest of a wave. The surfer goes into position to do a barrel ride on a wave twice her size as it swallows her up. The young American surfer is entirely submerged, yet the spray from the wave’s peak can be seen emerging from the end of the wave. Out of the mists comes Caroline Marks, who executes a flawless barrel before striking a triumphant posture and plunging headfirst into the ocean.

Finalist Caroline Marks was feeling confident following her victory against five-time WSL champion Carissa Moore. Her last combat in El Salvador was against Tyler Wright, and the crowd was amped to see one of the intense surfing clashes.

The waves in El Salvador were challenging for both surfers until Marks posted a 6.33 on the third wave. Wright opened the fourth wave with a 3.37, putting immediate pressure on herself. Marks had a 5.27 on the fifth wave, while Wright could only manage a 5.10. The final tally favored the American surfer, and she went on to win her first WSL event of 2023.
