It has been a long 2023 WSL season. In the realm of surfing, everyone from seasoned pros to complete outsiders has been known to fall at various stages of the competition. The World Surf League season has been a roller coaster for Brazilian surfing sensation Yago Dora. When he won the Vivo Rio Pro, everyone was taken aback, including Australian surfer Ethan Ewing. Dora, on the other hand, started out well in the Corona Open J-Bay, but the Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi eventually eliminated him. The loss hurt the Brazilian prodigy, but it also helped him get ready for his next chance at the yellow jersey.

The Brazilian surfing superstar’s debut at the WSL contest in South Africa was a delight. Yago Dora, however, did send out a genuine confession to his legion of admirers the instant he got eliminated, so the excitement didn’t last long. However, days after the loss, the surfer posted another open letter on the same social media site, this time recalling the good times he had at the WSL competition.

The fire still remains

It’s not the water temperature that determines the difficulty of the heats at a World Surf League event; rather, it’s the intensity of the on-the-water surf contests. Every surfer strives to win the coveted yellow jersey and become the best in the world, and Yago Dora is no exception. Dora claims, “Jbay was pretty special!” He then went on to explain, “These last 3 events I was very motivated for great results,” referring to the Surf City El Salvador Pro, the VIVO Rio Pro, and the Corona Open J-Bay.

The Brazilian prodigy was eliminated in the first round in El Salvador, but he shocked the surfing world by defeating Ethan Ewing and winning his home event in Rio de Janeiro, propelling himself into the top five on the Men’s Championship Tour. As the surfer continues, “It’s really good to know that you’re not limited and you have a lot to improve.” Although Dora has been a WSL contender for some time, he is still considered a rising star in the sport. With just one tournament remaining until September’s Rip Curl Finals, the victor of the 2023 Vivo Rio Pro is gearing up to defend himself from elimination.

With 36,865 points on the Championship Tour, Yago Dora is now in fifth place. But Gabriel Medina is closing in on the points with 35,440 on the Championship Tour, and anything can happen in the world of surfing right up to the last heat.

The heated surfing at Corona Open J-Bay

Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi faced Brazilian surfer Yago Dora in the quarterfinals of the South African WSL tournament. It was a do-or-die scenario for the two surfers, and they knew it. While Dora remained scoreless after the opening wave, Igarashi opened with a 5.33. The Japanese surfer kept the heat on Dora by scoring another 6.67 on the second wave.

Dora opened the third round with a 2.93 and followed with a 4.17 in the next wave. The Brazilian surfer’s efforts, however, were not enough to displace the Japanese surfer, and he was eliminated from the competition. Dora’s standing didn’t change much; he remained fifth and is well within striking distance of the yellow jersey.
