“This One Meant a Lot to Me”: Surfing Legend Kelly Slater Makes an Appeal to Fans on 51st Birthday

Kelly Slater, the surfing legend, has been showered with birthday wishes on this special day. The legendary figure himself has uploaded many Instagram Stories documenting the outpouring of best wishes he has gotten from admirers, friends, family, and even famous figures. While Slater shared a “proud dad moment” on his 50th birthday, his 51st birthday too had something special written all over it. For his 51st birthday, this one particular video made by a fan of his was able to strum a special chord in Slater’s heart.

The 11-time World Surf League (WSL) champion was surprised by Surf Radio’s Instagram post. According to the user’s bio, they specialize in making vintage surfing edits from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Kelly Slater posted the curated birthday-special video on his story which is technically a four-minute-long Instagram reel. The surfer obviously had a lot of respect for their work since he cited them in his own.

Kelly Slater was one of the first to share this post, among many well-wishers on the special occasion of the legend’s birthday. Not only did he post it to his story, but he also penned a lengthy, heartfelt message for the user who curated such a fantastic collection of vintage Slater photos.

Surf Radio mentioned in the post, “Happy birthday Kelly / Part 2/2 ( A Lifetime of Memories ) @kellyslater @taylrsltr I’m so sorry, I had 3 times the amount of pictures before editing, so by the time it was done I lost track, DM for credits, please.” They also included a classic song from 1991 called A Thousand Miles Away by the Hoodoo Gurus, which is a wonderful fit for Kelly Slater’s tale.

The 51-year-old went on an emotional roller coaster ride as they replied by reposting this video in his Instagram story, saying, “@_surf_radio_55013 for years has been compiling, posting, and re-editing my generation’s surf clips. He’s been especially kind to be such a supporter of mine and put together these amazing scrapbook edits. He’s also built a nice following from his dedication. Give him a follow if you like seeing and hearing a history of surf culture from the late 80’s til today. This one meant a lot to me. Thank you!” However, it was not just Slater who appreciated the post. His fans were equally elated.
