It was common knowledge in Heat 13 of the Round of 64 competition that only two of the four competitors would advance to the Round of 32 of the American competition. There were enough waves for everyone, and they all had impressive performances. Pittar opened the scoring with a 7.93, and he was followed by Young’s 7.17 and McDonagh’s 5.73 in the opening round of play. Lucas Silveira, a Brazilian surfer, earned a 6.23 on the third wave against mounting pressure. On his third wave, McDonagh also earned a 6.63, but 20-year-old Australian surfing prodigy George Pittar scored an incredible 8.50, putting an enormous amount of pressure on the other surfers.

However, Young’s 6.57 in the sixth wave was good enough to send him and Pittar through to the next round of the Wallex US Open of Surfing. The WSL declared on their official Instagram page that Pittar’s spectacular 8.50 wave was deemed “Wave of the day” since his overall score was 16.43, whereas Young’s was 13.74. The day was monumental for the surfer since it put him in the limelight for his desire to compete in the WSL Championship Tour.
