Surfing is a sport in which a surfer rides a wave of varying lengths while standing on a surfboard. Robbie Maddison, a stunt rider, found surfing on a surfboard to be uninteresting, so he came up with his own unique method: surfing while on a motorbike. It’s not a trick of the light, and your ears aren’t buzzing, either. This skilled stuntman really surfed while riding a motorbike in 2015. Back in the day, this was a huge deal, and now it’s all over the internet again.

A few weeks ago, the Instagram feed @thesurfingmafia featured an excerpt from Robbie Maddison’s 2015 surf-on-motorbike film. Despite being a rediscovered clip, it attracted almost half a million views as surfers relished the chance to revisit this breathtaking feat.

Robbie Maddison, an Australian stunt rider, merged his career with his childhood love in the short film Pipe Dream, in which he rides the vicious waves of Teahupo’o on a customized KTM 300 motocross bike. The original film was four minutes long, and the creation of this surf bike was the result of the efforts of five thousand guys. In the beginning, the stunt rider at 2Moto in Boise, Idaho, turned up a design for his friend Bill King depicting a motocrosser on skis and a paddle. Aluminum was used for the initial ski prototype, which ultimately failed. The group eventually decided on a sturdy composite that could be molded and cut by hand after learning that plastic was more durable. The stunt rider experimented with many different motorcycles before deciding on a KTM 250 SX.

The Australian stunt rider accepted the challenge to go surfing while riding a motorcycle. He rode his bike down to the beach, which shocked the other surfers, boaters, and beachgoers. The waves at Teahupo’o, however, are no laughing matter, and the difficulty level quickly increased. As the waves roll past the paddlers, Maddison makes a flying jump onto one and rides it out on his customized motocross bike. The stunt rider’s childhood goal came true, and the performance was a smashing success for him and his crew. As the whole globe watched in amazement, the original video also received around 35 million views.
