Surfing back in the day wasn’t even considered a sport as it is now. A lot of legendary surfing families are responsible for giving the sport a backbone over the years.
A rare image of the legendary surfer Pat Curren and Tom Curren currently is storming the surfing community. It shows the father-son duo walking out of Cove, Costa Rica. The picture was taken back in the 1970s when Pat Curren was giving his son a bit of surfing training. The Curren family was one of the oldest and most popular surfing families. They are also responsible for giving shape to the big-wave surfing boards. This also makes him a prominent figure in the community.

Born in 1932, Pat Curren was considered to be the best big wave surfer, during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He also began to take an interest in giving shape to the surfboard. Because the sport was not developed at the time, the surfer had a keen interest in making the sport a proper sport.
The legendary surfer started his sport journey at the age of 18. After he and his family moved to La Jolla, California, he climbed through the surfing tables and joined the Windansea Surf Club. Joining the surfing club made him more interested in the sport. Pat Curren then went on a surfing trip to Hawaii, where he trained for about two years. This brought him even closer to the sport, and then the surfer started to take an interest in shaping the surfboard.

After investing two years in crafting and shaping the surfboard, in 1960, his design was finally approved to be used by professionals. All his dedication to the sport also led him to become a pathfinder in the sport. Nevertheless, his son, Tom Curren, became one of the greatest surfers the world has ever seen.
The domination of Tom Curren
Pat Curren was blessed with his son, Tom Curren, in 1964. Just like his father, Tom Curren was pretty competitive. The ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) was formed as the sport had already taken shape. He went on his first world tour in 1983, and within two years he was dominating the sport.
