The Wallex US Open of Surfing is now happening in Huntington Beach, California, USA. There are just two days left of the tournament, and the surfing community has already seen several promising newcomers emerge. Despite the intense surf bouts, however, disputes have once again surfaced over the same issue: the determination of final scores. After the Surf Ranch Pro in 2023, the WSL’s scoring system came under intense scrutiny, and the surfing community called for an explanation from the league. The surfing community, however, remained unsatisfied despite the provided explanations, and the dispute continued to escalate.

This time, surfing enthusiasts have been discussing the WSL-selected “wave of the day” on social media. Australian surfer Morgan Cibilic earned an 8.17 on a challenging wave, although the wave itself was critiqued by fans rather than Cibilic’s score.

Nature has a significant role in the sport of surfing. Since waves are fundamental to surfing, surfers are at the mercy of the ocean’s conditions. Also, the surfers and spectators at these events sometimes have to deal with challenging weather. Although there have been intense bouts in this year’s Wallex US Open of Surfing, neither the spectators nor the competitors were expecting this wave in Heat 1 of the Round of 32. Morgan Cibilic, Nolan Rapoza, Joel Vaughan, and Samuel Pupo surfed in Heat 1, and they all had a tough time due to the challenging conditions.

The surfing competition at Huntington Beach Pier lasted 30 minutes, and Morgan Cibilic got off to a strong start by scoring a 6.67 on some challenging waves. While everyone else was having a hard time, Samuel Pupo managed to ride a 5.17 on his first wave. Cibilic’s second wave was short and challenging, but the Aussie surfer had a plan. Despite the short waves, Cilibic was able to pull off three consecutive cutbacks, which stunned onlookers and earned him a big 8.17, ultimately propelling him into the round of 16 at the Wallex US Open of Surfing.

Morgan Cilibic’s performance on the second wave of the day also won him the title of “wave of the day.” However, when WSL announced this, it was met with a negative reception from supporters.

Not a happy surfing fanbase

Everyone enjoys seeing surfers take on formidable waves, but when the waves don’t reach a minimum height, attendance drops. The comments portion of WSL’s Instagram post was flooded with outraged followers expressing their disapproval.

Despite tough waves, the surfer got an appreciation that read, “That’s what getting involved in small waves looks like.” A cryptic comment by a fan read, “In my Time Machine I just went back to the ASP in 1985. The more things change the more they stay the same.”
