Yago Dora is riding a wild wave in the 2023 WSL season. The surfer’s stunning triumph on home turf was a turning point in the Championship Tour standings after a shaky first half of the season. The Brazilian surfer won the 2023 Vivo Rio Pro by a landslide against the Australian surfer Ethan Ewing, shocking the surfing world. Dora’s victory in the Brazil WSL event gave the home audience what they wanted to see, and his ascent into the top five of the rankings gave him hope of competing in the Rip Curl Finals.

With just a few days left before the Tahiti Pro, the surfer has been seen lately honing his skills on the large waves of Itacoatiara. The area is well-known for its excellent surfing conditions, yet the possibility of waves as high as 15 feet is something to keep in mind since wipeouts on waves of that size are no laughing matter.

Teahupo’o, home of the Tahiti Pro and the surfing competition in the 2024 Olympics, will host both events. Tahiti has some of the world’s most dangerous waves, and any wipeout may result in serious or even deadly injuries for surfers. But if a surfer can prove they can conquer challenging waves, it looks great on their resume. Yago Dora, a professional surfer competing in the Tahitian WSL event, has been spotted surfing in Itacoatiara, which, like Tahiti, has tough waves, on Instagram. In his Instagram post, the Brazilian surfer stated, “Checking out Itacoatiara! What an angry spike!” The surfer is getting a head start on preparations for the Tahiti competition by putting in a lot of time in the water.

The Instagram video begins with the surfer having a good start on a barrel, and it concludes beautifully as Dora absolutely grips it. The camera perspective shifts to a bird’s-eye view, seeing him do another barrel. When his audience wasn’t sufficiently awed by his repeated barrel rides, the Brazilian surfer leaped off the waves after the barrel and executed a beautiful 360. And that’s not all: he pulls off a pair of cutbacks and another barrel on the big wave.
