Jamie O’Brien recently shared his bizarre surfing experience in a YouTube video. O’Brien was 16 years old, and as usual, he went surfing, although he was aware that something was off with the low waves.
It’s all fun and game until
James O’Brien has a passion for surfing. He grew up watching the sport and its glamorous pros. So whenever he got a chance to surf at the Pipeline, he surely did it. He loved getting the attention of the sports photographers there. When he was 16, the surfer paddled out on his surfboard to showcase his talent at the pipeline, as suggested by his father. He came across a series of waves, but the third wave wiped him out. The wipeout threw him up in the air while the lip of the wave hit his leg. The impact unfortunately broke the surfer’s leg into two parts.
“The lips smashed me down and it created like a force and it broke my leg. Sucked over the falls I’m underwater my legs feel numb. I’m grabbing my leg and then it starts just like piercing pain and I’m like oh my god this is so bad,” says the surfing sensation in his Youtube video.
Rescue of the surfing sensation
Jamie O’Brien himself swam with one arm and one broken leg to the beach. 15 minutes later, after crawling his way onto the beach, the lifeguard who came to the rescue of the surfer, was none other than his father. His father gave him some optimism and made him comfortable in his lifeguard tower.

Both the surfer and his father came to know that he suffered a spiral fracture, which occurs when one of the bones is broken in a twisting motion. The surfer did heal from the fracture in three months. It also taught him how to be more careful when dealing with smaller waves that might not kill, but leave a scar that would haunt them for the rest of their lives.
