Both novice and experienced surfers face threats from the ocean’s waves and the critters that live underneath them. Although there are thrilling moments to be had in the sport, it can also be dangerous and even fatal for certain people. Australian pro surfer Matt Wilkinson once had a similar experience while surfing when he came face to fin with a shark. The encounter lasted just a few seconds, yet it was enough to cause widespread terror since these animals are top predators in their natural environment. The surfer has already revealed the details of his encounter with the apex predator.

From TikTok to news outlets, this incident was widely covered online. The Australian professional surfer was mentioned by The Guardian as saying that he had a close call with a shark. Nonetheless, the surfer responds to the situation in a very particular way.

Sharks are definitely not something to take lightly. While there are more than 300 known shark species, only a few have ever been linked to attacks on people. Because of their extensive evolutionary distance from us, sharks never see people as prey; instead, attacks occur when the shark is either too curious or unable to distinguish between us and other creatures. Off the coast of Ballina, in northern New South Wales, a drone captured this video of the surfer Matt Wilkinson narrowly escaping being attacked by a shark. It was estimated to be around 8.20 feet in length. Wilkinson was already befuddled at the time of the meeting since he had just heard the sound of a splash but then saw nothing when he turned around. He continues by saying that he was told to go back to the beach because the predator he had narrowly escaped was still in the area.

According to a statement that Wilkinson made to Surf Life Saving NSW, reported by The Guardian, “I got to the shore feeling a bit weird and the lifeguards showed me the footage and I realised how close it came without knowing it was there. It looks like it’s going for my leg and it’s changed its mind.” Wilkinson further explains his good fortune that day, saying that he often surfs in shark-infested waters but has never been in such close proximity to one before. This attack on the professional surfer may have ended in tragedy, but the shark ultimately changed its mind.
