Now that VIVO Rio Pro is over, surfers may watch the wave collision in Ballito Pro in South Africa. The surfing world, however, is still waiting for the controversy and drama that occur outside the field of play. The finals of Rio Pro were a showcase of Brazilian dominance, as Yago Dora beat Ethan Ewing by a score of 4 points. But there’s more good news for Brazilians: Filipe Toledo, the reigning world champion, has moved to the top of the Men’s Championship Tour Rankings and will be wearing the yellow jersey from now on. Despite all the celebrations, Toledo has revealed some health news that might be worrisome for the current world champion.

After falling in the round of 16 at Rio Pro, Filipe Toledo recently shared a lengthy Instagram thread of photographs and a video. The surfer has previously thanked his admirers for their support, but the video also disclosed that he is now dealing with health concerns. The injury is cause for worry since the following week, South Africa will host the Corona Open J-Bay, an event that would count on the Championship series, and the surfer may not be able to participate if the pain persists.

Will we see the yellow jersey being taken away from the Brazilian star?

As a sport, surfing waits for no one. However, the Brazilian surfer has now posted a worrying Instagram video, which has caught his admirers by surprise in light of an impending huge event. The surfer first mentioned the surfer’s “positive” MRI findings in this “quick update” on Toledo. Further, Toledo said, “The only injury I have right now is cartilage injury.” The surfer acknowledged the severity of the situation by adding, “few days to get back into the water.” As he expresses his gratitude to the medical staff and his team that have assisted him, Toledo says he can only think about his “recovery” for the time being.

The American surfer Griffin Colapinto had the yellow jersey after the last event, but he had to relinquish it to the Brazilian great Filipe Toledo since he had fallen 760 points behind. Toledo has worn this shirt before, winning the WSL championship in 2022 when he was the undisputed best surfer in the world. By a score of 0.67 points, Jadson Andre, also a Brazilian surfer, easily beat out Toledo in the Rio Pro. However, he had nothing to worry about despite the loss; his new total of 44,980 points put him ahead of Griffin Colapinto in the standings.

Now that he has his injuries under control, Toledo can concentrate on recovering in time for the Corona Open J-Bay in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. As things stand, though, the Brazilian superstar would rather not miss out on the chance to show off his skills while wearing the famous yellow jersey.

The Fate of the 2022 Surfing World Champion

In 2013, Filipe Toledo made his debut in the WSL. The surfer’s extraordinary skill in the water has been a source of awe and amazement ever since. Toledo is the current world champion and a surfer who is still eager to impress his adoring public in the water since he also won the 2022 WSL championship.

However, the 2023 season has been quite a roller coaster for the Brazilian surfing superstar. He finished fifth in the first event at the Billabong Pro Pipeline, which he lost to Joao Chianca. However, Toledo came to the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach with nothing but vengeance in mind, and he did not disappoint. Toledo has now won two events this year, making him a popular pick on the championship tour as he wears the yellow jersey and prepares to face off against the top five finishers in the title race.
