One of the best ways to avoid the summer heat is to go surfing. In the summer, surfers flock to Trinidad, California’s Moonstone Beach County Park. However, a surfer’s luck can suddenly take a turn for the worse; something that happened recently at Moonstone Beach. Two clips were posted on YouTube show a surfer being found unconscious and subsequently rescued from the water. The neighboring audience also responded quickly, dialing 911 without delay.

On May 14, 2023, beachgoers at Moonstone Beach County Park didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. But in the late afternoon, when two surfboards washed up on shore, everything was flipped upside down.

Surfing session that went absolutely wrong

Larisa King, who was on the beach, witnessed what seemed to be vertical movement from a surfer, who, as it later turned out was attempting to save her sister from drowning. The female surfer progressed toward the onlookers, where she broke the bad news. While the others helped bring the other surfer’s unconscious body in, King dialed 911. The sister of the unconscious surfer performed CPR before rescuers came. After 30 minutes of CPR, a Coast Guard helicopter arrived just in time to airlift the surfer to safety.

Everyone on the beach pitched in to help the paramedics get the surfer to the helicopter, as is evident in the footage. Larisa King described how the community rallied together to get the surfer to safety before the paramedics arrived. Despite the horrors experienced by everyone, King was grateful for the support of those around her.

She added, “Please know that the beach goers came together well to assist and that, coupled with the efforts of our first responders, was inspiring to see despite the trauma of the experience.”

One of the most concerning factors in the country

Drowning accidents caused by surfing occur all around the globe. However, the United States is not among the top nations where people drown on a regular basis. According to a 2019 study, 1.2 individuals per 100,000 in the United States drown each year. However, since unintentional deaths continue to be a worrying trend, authorities are more worried about beachgoers who love activities like surfing.

As of April 27, 2023, early data on fatalities in surf zones throughout the National Weather Service’s regions of forecast responsibility indicates roughly 30 deaths. Twenty-six of these fatalities have been caused by rip currents at various beaches, two by high surf at Moss Landing Beach in California, and two by tidal currents. With 30 fatalities in less than half a year, authorities on beaches around the nation are on high alert.
