If you’re a surfer, you know that the internet is a never-ending source of fresh surfing concepts to try. One such innovation is river surfing, which transports a surfer from the unpredictable waves of dangerous seas to the fast currents of certain rivers. The Sierra Nevada Mountains in California are a favorite destination for river surfers since they are home to seven main river streams.
A video uploaded on YouTube has recently become quite popular. The video, posted to YouTube by user SnowBrains, seems to show a group of surfers attempting to ride the water of a river in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Standing waves, tidal bores, and upstream waves are all fair game for river surfers. There’s been no mention of water in the film, but it seems to be a riverbank with manmade rock formations serving as railings and steps. However, the footage opens with one surfer doing some impressive twists and turns while clinging to a rope. A second surfer similarly decked out in gear, sits on the rock formation to the surfer’s side. As the video goes on, though, the surfer and his companion come up with a plan, and the friend carries the surfer and leaps on the surfboard, making it a tandem ride.

Unfortunately, the tandem wasn’t as successful as expected. The two surfers lost their footing and tumbled into the river almost instantly. After a brief intermission, the video returns to its original setting, in which a surfer is shown swimming in the river while grabbing onto the rope tethered to the rocky shorelines. However, another surfer holding the rope just shook it, causing the first surfer to lose grip and fall headfirst into the river.
When natural disasters became a surf course
The sport known as “river surfing” is, unsurprisingly, practiced in rivers. However, surf vlogger Jamie O’Brien’s river surfing experience was once quite exceptional. Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu was flooded as a big river breached its banks. Once a popular destination for both residents and visitors, the beach became little more than a stunt course for the surf vlogger.

O’Brien and his fellow surfers didn’t waste any time after finding the course; they hopped on their surfboards and rode the river break. He took on the risky task with his usual flair for drama and dogged determination. The surfer rode the river break, doing stunts despite the natural apprehensions.
