The Tahiti Pro is the last stop on the WSL Championship Tour before the Rip Curl Finals. For the time being, surfers have their pick of two big competitions, both of which are being held at the Huntington Beach Pier. The Huntington Beach Longboard Classic is just as highly anticipated as the Wallex US Open of Surfing. However, longboarding is a more relaxed approach to surfing. Surfers who ride longboards often ride smaller waves and are able to do complex maneuvers that would be impossible on a shorter board. However, this level of competition has produced its fair share of sports legends as well.

The Huntington Beach Longboard Classic has been featured on WSL’s official social media account. Kai Ellice-Flint, an Australian longboard surfer, earned the “Wave of the day” accolade in this video after doing some remarkable techniques on a small wave.

Two Australian surfers, Kai Ellice-Flint and Max Weston, went head-to-head during the Elimination Round of Heat 6 at the Huntington Beach Longboard Classic on the Huntington Beach Pier. Weston posted scores of 7.00 and 5.93 on the first and second waves, respectively, showing that he was off to a great start. Until the fourth wave arrived, Ellice-Flint’s efforts weren’t enough to surpass his opponent’s score. Ellice-Flint is seen in the Instagram video catching a little wave and beginning to sail on his longboard. However, this was no ordinary cruise; the surfer had gone to the very edge of the board and remained there for an extended period of time.

The surfer even displayed his grace and skill on the longboard by moving while the heat was still on. The judges were quite pleased by these moves, giving them an 8.50 overall score. The tides finally turned in Ellice-Flint’s favor in the fifth wave when he put up a 7.60, good enough to overcome his opponent.

Fans of the sport of surfing all across the world took notice when Kai Ellice-Flint progressed to the quarterfinals with a final score of 16.10.
