Many remarkable achievements by surfing luminaries and some fan-generated controversy have marked the 2023 WSL season. Nevertheless, the whole season has been a massive location where skills and drama have blossomed, changing the WSL standings simply in a few tournaments. Brazilian surfer Filipe Toledo recently won an event in El Salvador after crushing American competitor Griffin Colapinto. The VIVO Rio Pro is the next event, and it will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the hometown of the 2022 world champion and of a surfer who has many fond memories of the competition.

With the VIVO Rio Pro just around the corner, the World Surf League (WSL) has posted something nostalgic on its social media page. This is the footage of Filipe Toledo’s perfect 10 in the finals of the 2015 Rio Pro, when he shocked the surfing world.

In 2015, when Filipe Toledo first showed up on the championship tour, he was a novice surfer among the other competitors. When Toledo won the opening event of the 2015 season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, everyone was taken aback. After that, the novice surfer’s rising reputation preceded him. But the 2015 Oi Rio Pro, held in his own country, was an experience the Brazilian surfer will never forget.

Filipe Toledo spread like wildfire until the finals, when he annihilated every competitor. He eventually ran across Bede Durbidge, an Australian surfer who was also gunning for the event title, in the finals. It was a heated competition among the surfers, but Toledo surprised everyone with a move no one saw coming until the finals. In the clip, Toledo rides the crest of the wave and launches himself into the air for an aerial. But that wasn’t enough to have the crowd going crazy; he then turned a full 360 degrees in midair. As if it weren’t shocking enough, the judges gave the Brazilian surfer a perfect score of 10.

Toledo won his first World Surf League (WSL) event with a perfect score in the 2015 Oi Rio Pro. The surfer has progressed greatly since 2022, when he won the world championship. Although he is now only in second place in the standings, the surfer is optimistic about the rest of the season since it promises to bring fresh challenges.

What to look forward to VIVO Rio Pro?

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will be a destination on the 2023 WSL Championship Tour. The surfing community and Brazilian fans alike are anticipating the next VIVO Rio Pro with great anticipation. All the action from El Salvador will pick up right here, so surfers won’t have to wait as long.
