Chris Offer was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a malignancy of the lymphatic system, a number of years ago. Even though the old lady’s life was on the downturn while she was recovering from treatment, she found a new feeling of freedom with a surfing club. The Granny Grommets are a group of senior citizens that surf and swim together at Albany’s Middleton Beach. Offer, like the other members of the club, has found the gathering to be a source of joy since its inception in the year 2000.

After ABC Perth shared the story on their social media, it quickly went viral. Offer went on to say that joining this community was one of the finest decisions she made when she moved to Albany and that it aided in her recovery from the grim disease.

The Granny Grommets are a group of surfers in Albany, Australia, who meet every Friday morning to hit the waves. You need to be over 50, proficient in water safety, and ready for a good time to participate. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of the Granny Grommets when they have their brightly colored surfboards in their hands, their wetsuits on, and smiles stretching over their faces? For the past 23 years, Chris Offer has been a part of the same surf crew as the rest of the founding members. She has also been honored with the unique OBE medal presented to members of the organization at the age of 80.

Offer said that she spent her entire life farming in the inland and never once had the opportunity to see the coast. She later reflected on her decision to retire in Albany, stating, “Retirement to Albany was just absolute bliss for me … I couldn’t get in quick enough.” The Granny Grommets, she says, are the “happiest group of women,” and she counts herself among their number. According to the seasoned surfer, the constant positive emotions in the group are what keeps everyone coming back.

Val Parker, a fellow recipient of the OBE, was one of the numerous “Granny Grommets” who enabled Chris Offer to return to the water after her medical care. Parker also notes that she is one of eight members of the group who are all 80 or older. She concludes by saying that the surf outings are always enjoyable for everyone in the group.
