Home/Olympics

Fans of the NHL like watching regular games and even on-ice fights, but there’s something more they’re eagerly anticipating. Hockey fans like nothing more than a good fight, but if you think the answer is a hot mic, you’d be right. A “hot mic” occurs when an unintended leak of a player’s private discussion occurs via the microphone. These occurrences are uncommon because players and teams try to avoid situations where offensive language may be used. Not so long ago, the same thing happened during a game between the Arizona Coyotes and the New Jersey Devils.

This hot mic footage was posted to the r/hockey subreddit on Reddit and instantly went viral. In the comments, fans went wild when someone said that the leaked chirp could only have come from a Coyotes player.

The Arizona Coyotes hosted the New Jersey Devils at the ASU Multi-Purpose Arena. The Coyotes were beaten badly by the Devils, despite the fact that the game was played in the Coyotes’ home arena. It was just five minutes into the third period, but the Coyotes’ chances were already dim due to their 3-4 deficit against the Devils. During a timeout, the Coyotes’ broadcast picked up a player’s chirp.

No one knows who the player was or who the chirp was directed at, but the whole hockey world chuckled at it. In the clip, the words uttered and caught by the Coyotes’ broadcast were, “You probably didn’t bang a single girl in Halifax you’re so f**ing ugly.” A lot of people loved this right away on Reddit, however, others were quick to point out that the only member of the Devils from Halifax is Liam O’Brien. Nonetheless, Devils players Nico Hischier and Timo Meier played for the Halifax Mosseheads in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League before joining the Devils (QMJHL). Regardless of who the remark was intended to mock, it has been met with universal approval in the hockey community.
