Home/Olympics

NHL fans have often witnessed the rink transformed into a boxing ring and they enjoy it almost as much as they enjoy watching excellent ice hockey. In the middle of a hockey game on Saturday night between the Colorado Avalanche and the Calgary Flames, Kurtis MacDermid and Milan Lucic boxed it out.

B/R Open Ice posted the footage of the fight between the two players on their Twitter accounts. By the looks of things in the clip, the players had already taken off their gloves and were ready to put on a show for the spectators in the seats, the commentators, and the viewers at home.

The Avalanche and the Flames played in Denver, Colorado, at the Ball Arena. Fans in Denver were ecstatic to see their team go up to an early lead and never look back. After being smacked in the helmet by the Avalanche’s Kurtis MacDermid just three minutes into the second period, Flames forward Milan Lucic immediately dropped his gloves and prepared for a fight. Once Lucic dropped his gloves, MacDermid did the same, and it seemed like the ice rink was about to convert into a boxing ring between the two NHL players.

Despite the referee’s best efforts to calm the situation, neither player were willing to wait for the temperature to drop. Both the crowd and the commentators went crazy when they realized they were going to see a ‘heavyweight tilt’ when the officials unleashed both athletes.

Milan Lucic and Kurtis MacDermid took their places in the rink like two professional boxers about to square off. As they clutch each other’s sweaters, the first punches fly. It was Lucic who landed the first blow, but MacDermid quickly returned fire. Both NHL players put on a boxing performance until MacDermid went down after taking an uppercut from Lucic. MacDermid was seen leaving the rink injured.

After this scuffle, play resumed with the home side leading the visitors by a score of 3-0. The Flames were behind three goals until right winger Tyler Toffoli scored his team’s first goal in the 38th minute. There was genuine optimism among the Flames after this goal.

Denis Malgin, the Avalanche’s center, scored a goal in the 48th minute of the third period to end any comeback hopes the Flames may have had. After that, the Flames were unable to score, and the home team went on to win 4-1 and got revenge on the Flames for knocking out their defenseman Kurtis MacDermid.
