Unbelievable Ending to NHL Game Leaves Fans Wondering “What Just Happened”

Last night’s NHL game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Detroit Red Wings was a barnburner. Since the game was being played at Edmonton’s Rogers Place, the black and orange club came in fairly pumped. The Red Wings, though, were confident enough to risk taking on the home team in their own winning run.

Dylan Larkin, captain of the Detroit Red Wings, scored the game’s first goal in the fifth minute. Moritz Seider, defenseman for the Red Wings, scored a surprising goal in the 18th minute to put his club over the Oilers. Within twenty minutes, the Red Wings had already established their superiority over the Oilers.

The moment the Edmonton Oilers proved themselves

Oilers center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the first goal of the second period in the 22nd minute. Oilers captain Connor McDavid’s brilliant assist on the goal, gave his club the boost they needed to mount a comeback. Robby Fabbri of the Red Wings, on the other hand, scored to break the home team’s willpower and extend the visitors’ lead to two goals.

But in the 32nd minute, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored again, this time with another assist from the Oilers’ captain. Olli Maatta, defender for the Red Wings, scored a goal in the 37th minute to extend the visitors’ advantage against the Oilers to two goals. Consequently, the Oilers’ position did not look good when the second period finished with a score of 2-4.

However, the third period was the time for the Oilers to shine, with center Leon Draisaitl scoring a goal. In a 4-4 thriller, Oilers forward Derek Ryan tied the score. Both teams’ goaltenders were great in the extra period; so much so, that neither team scored any goals. But the penalty shootout was just as tense as the rest of the game, going all the way to the fifth round.

Evander Kane, left winger for the Oilers, had a shot stopped magnificently by Red Wings goaltender Ville Husso in the deciding penalty shootout. However, Jack Campbell, the goaltender for the Oilers, was unable to prevent a goal by Pius Suter of the Red Wings, who demonstrated his deft touch with the puck. The Oilers were crushed by the Red Wings, who won the game 5-4.
