Many ice hockey greats have come and gone from the NHL arena. Despite the fact that the greats are no longer physically there, the NHL ice and the fans’ hearts will always be warmed by the plays they made. Bob Baun, a legend with the Toronto Maple Leafs, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86, astounding the ice hockey community in the middle of the offseason.

In a fitting tribute, news of the loss of the four-time Stanley Cup champion was shared across all online platforms. After the death of the legendary Canadian defenseman who helped make the Toronto Maple Leafs what they are today, the NHL issued a statement on their official website.

Both Bob Baun and the tagline “Legends Never Die” remain true to their namesake. The former Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenseman, who passed away on August 15, was 86 years old, but his plays will live on in the hearts of hockey fans everywhere. From 1956–1973, the defenseman logged 964 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Oakland Seals, and Detroit Red Wings. His overtime goal in Game 6 of the 1964 Stanley Cup Final is the moment for which he is most remembered. Considering he scored it while playing on a broken ankle, it wasn’t your average goal.

At 13:15 of the third period, Baun was helped off the ice after being hurt while blocking a shot by Alex Delvecchio of the Red Wings. As a result, the Red Wings had to play in Game 7. The Maple Leafs won their third straight Stanley Cup thanks in large part to Baun’s plus-2 performance in Game 7. With four Stanley Cups under his belt, Baun became a household name thanks to his time with the Maple Leafs. According to the league’s official announcement, the late NHL great was the “pillar of the dynastic Toronto Maple Leafs’ defense.” They also expressed their “condolences” to the Baun family and all of Baun’s admirers who are grieving his death.

The name Bob Baun will go down as one of the finest defensemen in NHL history, and the plays he made throughout his brilliant career will be displayed to the next generation of ice hockey players.
