Home/Olympics

In a thrilling NHL matchup at the SAP Center (also known as the Shark Tank), the San Jose Sharks faced off against the Washington Capitals. The Sharks got off to a great start, but by the second period, the Capitals had shown the home crowd that the eagles are the superior predators. Spectators also saw a heated exchange between Sharks head coach David Quinn and referee Gord Dwyer during the climax of the clash. That was the first time anybody had seen Quinn act so aggressively toward a game official, and it caught everyone by surprise.

Quinn lost his cool in the third period of a Saturday night game with his team trailing the Capitals by a disastrous 2–4. The Hockey Feed posted about the event on their own Facebook page, where fans weighed in to voice their disapproval of the NHL’s handling of the matter.

At 5:45 of the third period, Kevin Labanc was penalized for clipping, and soon after that, David Quinn was interjected. Referee Gord Dwyer went to the home team’s bench after the penalty call to speak with the Shark’s head coach, who then pointed at the official and yelled obscenities at him before being ejected. B/R Open Ice posted a video on Twitter that showed him yelling expletives at Dwyer as he went off the bench and back into the locker room.

However, the game continued. The Sharks ended up losing to the Capitals by a score of 3–8. Quinn received a game misconduct for verbally abusing a referee. The senior executive vice president of hockey operations of the league will look into the situation and determine whether additional sanctions are warranted.

This is the first time a Sharks head coach has been ejected from a game since Pete DeBoer in 2018 when he was sent to the bench during the second period wherein he engaged in a profanity-laced hurling at an NHL referee while coaching against the Vegas Golden Knights. Evander Kane, a former forward with the Sharks, was also dismissed from the game on similar grounds. The club’s reputation has taken a hit because of these events, but the supporters think otherwise.

NHL world united with the head coach against the referee

Some fans weren’t the least bit outraged by David Quinn’s behavior, while some others weren’t even sure if the referees needed to cool it with the penalties. The NHL community did not waste any time wading into the discussion after seeing this circumstance posted on the Hockey Feed’s official Facebook page.

Out of all the hateful comments towards the referee, here’s a fan who is comparing the NHL referee to an MLB umpire, saying, “Dwyer is like the angel hernandez of NHL refs. He’s horrible.”

This fan left a cheeky comment, saying, “I mean, in his defense, they were absolute dogsh*t across the league today it seemed”

It looks like this fan is also very angry with the NHL officials, as they say, “Good on David, these referee’s are a f***ing joke. Every missed call they should be fined as well.”

A lot of fans also appreciate the effort that the Sharks’ head coach took to criticize the referee on his face, as this comment reads, “Good for him, we should get a go fund me started for Coach. More coaches should stand up to these idiots.”
