Nothing on the ice has been as shocking for NHL fans since 2019, when Garnet Hathaway spat on Erik Gudbranson’s face. The whole situation was more chaotic than what happened between Miller and Doughty, but the result was the same. At 16 minutes into the first period, there was a frantic post-whistle scrum in which the incident took place. The referees, though, took swift action to rectify the situation, sending Miller off the ice with a match penalty.
In his Twitter post, Miller addressed the incident, saying, “I wanted to take a moment to address what occurred in the last night’s game. I have all the respect in the world for Drew Doughty and what happened was completely accidental. I would never intend to do something like that on purpose, it goes against everything I am as a person and player.” After addressing the incident and accepting his fault, Miller apologized to Doughty, saying, “I felt awful about it and I am thankful Drew gave me the opportunity to apologize and explain myself in person after the game.” After Miller’s statement was reposted on the Facebook page of hockeyfights.com, however, fans’ reactions were divided.

Among a lot of fans not accepting Miller’s apology, this fan also leaves a similar comment that reads, “Really accidental give me a break. You got caught. Suspend this clown. So disgusting and disrespectful to Doughty and the game. NYR must be so proud of this player.”
Miller and Doughty have an age gap of 10 years, and some fans demanded respect from the young ones towards the experienced players in the game. One fan pointed out, “What was done is done. With kids watching grown men acting so disrespectful. I can’t help but think that if the color were reversed on these players, we wouldn’t here the end of it. That shouldn’t matter either way. There should always be respect there no matter what.”
A supporter of Miller arrived in the comment section saying, “He’s a good kid. Take your lumps and move on.” Another fan of the Rangers defenseman in the comment section, didn’t like the incident, saying, “I like miller. But come on bro accidental?? What u accidentally miss his face and got visor. Come up with something better at least man lol.”
