Most people agree that Freddie Mercury, lead vocalist of Queen, is one of the best rock & roll singers of all time. His extravagant stage presence and dramatic songwriting combined to create unforgettable live songs that will forever be remembered as among the finest of their era. Bohemian Rhapsody (1975), Barcelona (1988), Killer Queen (1974), and many more are among Mercury’s finest works. He was a top artist, but he also loved the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL.

A picture of the musician from the 1980s, when he was at the height of his popularity, surfaced on Twitter not long ago. The photograph unexpectedly portrayed Freddie Mercury holding a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey with his name and the number 7 stitched onto the back.

Freddie Mercury once performed in a Maple Leafs’ shirt with the number 7 and his first name written over the front in place of his usual theatrical outfits. The fact that the team went to such lengths to design a unique jersey for him is another proof of their undying devotion to him.

 

On Twitter, a user who goes by the handle Super 70s Sports shared this iconic picture on their account, and they wrote in the caption, “The Maple Leafs shook up both music and the NHL in 1977 when they traded Lanny McDonald to Queen for Freddie Mercury.” Mercury and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ executive producer Brian May is also seen in the picture getting a jersey.

The Montreal Canadiens weren’t about to be outdone, so they also made it into Mercury’s legendary attire. He was wearing a Habs cap and jamming out to Another One Bites the Dust while in the music video. Mercury was surely loved by a lot of NHL clubs, as he has been seen performing along with the merchandise that he used to receive.

A fan left a cheeky comment, saying, “Toronto needed a ‘Killer Queen’ to be the enforcer on the penalty kill.”

This fan left really wanted to be in the moment when Mercury came to Toronto to recieve his jersey as they say, “I’d have paid to see that! (the Maple Leafs I mean, not the Lanny McDonald-fronted Queen)”
