The forward impressed so much during tryouts that the Medicine Hat Tigers picked him as the first overall pick in the 2022 Western Hockey League (WHL) Draft. Even before he enters the league in 2026, he has been projected as a first-round choice in the National Hockey League.

The NHL prospect is currently taking things slow, and in the interview reported by CBC News, he says, “When you’re in the rink you don’t really think about it too much. But honestly, it’s a pretty cool feeling to have that title behind you. Not everybody gets that.”

However, Anderson didn’t only show his gratitude to the prospect, as he also gave good remarks for the rest of the team, saying, “It’s the rest of the boys too. It’s really a privilege to coach them as well. A lot of good, good hockey players and a lot of good people, too.” Anderson said that the Yukon had produced many skilled hockey players throughout the years and that he hoped McKenna would serve as an inspiration to kids in less populous provinces of the state.
