The arrest of New Jersey Devils’ assistant coach, Andrew Brunette, for DUI in South Florida, came as a major blow as the team prepared for the playoffs. In the NHL Metropolitan Division, the Devils are currently in second place. The incident happened on Wednesday in Broward County.

Andrew Brunette, formerly of the Chicago Blackhawks, left the NHL in 2012. Brunette resigned from his coaching position with the Florida Panthers in July 2022, and was subsequently appointed as an associate coach by the New Jersey Devils.

According to an arrest record acquired by Local 10 News, a Broward Sheriff’s officer saw a golf cart parked unlawfully outside of a pub on 200 Northeast, 21st Avenue, in Deerfield Beach. Brunette emerged from the pub as the deputy was writing up a ticket and informed the officer that he was leaving. When handing down the citation, the deputy noticed Brunette’s speech was slurred and he was shaky on his feet. The deputy said that he had seen Brunette depart the area while driving the golf cart, and also noticed him run two stop signs.

According to the arrest report, when deputies asked Brunette for identification, he gave them the golf cart’s registration and insurance. However, he gave his wife’s driver’s license, explaining that he wasn’t behind the wheel. Brunette was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. He was also charged with driving under the influence and failing to stop at a stop sign. Next, he was sent to Broward County’s main jail.
