Home/Olympics

As a historic NHL team, the Chicago Blackhawks have struggled this year. Fans have been disappointed since the squad slipped to second-to-last place in the Western Conference. But now, Blackhawks fans have to deal with even more heartbreak, as captain Jonathan Toews or ‘Captain Serious’, announced his decision to depart the team.

Since the Blackhawks’ return from the All-Star break, Jonathan Toews has missed all six games. His last game was on January 28 against the Edmonton Oilers. The Chicago Blackhawks captain left the team on Sunday with an official statement to his team and fans.

A lower-body injury, similar to that of another Blackhawks player, prevented Captain Serious from participating in the 2021 season. Many Blackhawks ‘supporters were devastated by the official announcement and have already expressed their feelings in the comments section.

Toews’ statement was uploaded to NHL’s official website. It read, “First of all, thank you to the fans and all those who have shown concern about my absence. I’m still dealing with the symptoms of Long COVID and Chronic Immune Response Syndrome. It has been really challenging to play through these symptoms. In the last few weeks, it has reached the point where I had no choice but to step back and concentrate on getting healthy. I am thankful for the patience and support of my teammates, the coaching staff, and the entire Blackhawks organization.”

The news was also shared on Second City Hockey’s Facebook page. As trade rumors were in for Toews, one fan took to the Facebook post and conveyed a candid message, saying, “He was on pace to have a 20-25 goal season. I’m not sure who wouldn’t want that in a third line center, plus 58% from the dot. He can still take the year off and recover through the summer. Let him retire as a Blackhawk.”

Another fan was just sad to see Captain Serious go, but they accepted the fact saying, “3 Cups and an all-time great Blackhawks… Love him to death.. Sad, but maybe it’s getting time for Captain Serious to consider the idea of hangin’ up the skates…… Helluva career! Been concusssed multiple times and played thru them… Nothing more to prove..”

A straight but heartfelt comment was left by a Blackhawks fan, saying, “End of an era. Smile and say goodbye.”

“At this moment he is still tied as goal leader for the team even with this time off. He also is around 64% on face offs. Too bad he can not finish strong this season.”

“No matter what you do Captain u will always be our Captain. Thank you for the many years of hard work and successes.”
