The Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings had a fierce contest on Saturday night in the NHL. The ice rink turned into a boxing ring when players started trading punches, in addition to playing ice hockey. The game’s temper tantrums were enormous, and a little altercation quickly escalated into a full-scale brawl. As a result, a left winger for the Boston Bruins who had been suspended for a similar incident, criticized the NHL referees for their sloppy application of the rules.

Twitter user Nasty Knuckles posted a video of the fight that occurred during the second period of the game. Big names in the NHL commented on the video, which caused it to go viral.

In the National Hockey League, disputes between spectators and players, over officials’ calls are as common as boxing on the ice. It can lead to a lot of anger very quickly, and it seems like the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, has been one of the biggest offenders when it comes to the officiating debate throughout the years.

This incident was first discussed by an ex-NHL goalie, Martin Biron, who left a reply, saying, “Copley got a 5min match penalty for throwing punches with the blocker. I get that if it’s a sucker punch with the blocker but these love taps won’t hurt anybody!!!” This same tweet was replied to by Bruins’ Brad Marchand, who said, “I got 6 games for a love tap, he got off with murder if you wanna compare apples.”

Marchand tweeted his thoughts on the incident involving Kings goaltender Phoenix Copley. Copley was given a 5-minute major for punching with his blocker, during the altercation at hand. While Marchand seems to have objected to Copley’s, relatively lenient sentence, for wielding a weapon in battle, he argued that he himself had received far more severe punishments, for less serious offenses. That simply seemed unjust to the Bruins star, and he thinks the NHL should take these punishments more seriously.

Fans had mixed reactions to Brad Marchand’s reply

The crowd enjoys nothing more than seeing a fight break out between two teams at least once throughout a game. Fans were divided on how they felt about Marchand’s response, which again accused NHL officials of bias. Here are some comments to prove it.

“You succeed with the world against you. Keep it up!”

“Officiating has been a complete joke this season all through the league. Inconsistency is a huge issue.”

“But you never got suspended for licking another player. So you have that.”

“I just wanna know why we were robbed of a goalie fight.”
