Home/Olympics

The start of the 2023–24 NHL season is still a ways off, so ice hockey fans may relax for the time being. Even though the NHL season is on hiatus, there have been enough controversial contracts, retirements, and other developments to keep ice hockey fans interested. The 2022–23 season was a huge disappointment for Chicago Blackhawks supporters when the team decided to let veteran captain Jonathan Toews leave after his eight-year contract expired. While the Blackhawks captain may have been thinking about becoming a free agent and speaking with other clubs, leading NHL Insider Frank Seravalli has a different opinion.

Frank Seravalli has provided a major career update in the wake of several speculations involving former Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. There are two possible outcomes for Toews’ future now that he is a free agent after a long NHL career.

The Chicago Blackhawks selected forward Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. He has played 1,067 games with his squad and has experienced many highs and lows together. He was a respected and combative player in the NHL who earned $119,362,195. Fans of the Chicago Blackhawks ice hockey team were shocked when the team revealed during the 2022–23 season’s last games that their longstanding captain would not be returning the following season.

But whether or not the veteran Blackhawks captain would continue playing in the NHL was the big issue. The 35-year-old forward has never been a free agent in the NHL before, and thus far, he hasn’t signed any contracts or been traded. The NHL superstar, for his part, keeps his professional life under wraps. HockeyFeed claims that NHL insider Frank Seravalli is now reporting on Toews because he is “hearing rumblings that he could announce his retirement.” Given that neither the club nor he has provided any updates on his future in the NHL, this is a major revelation.

Unfortunately for Blackhawks fans, Jonathan Toews has yet to comment on his NHL future, so there is nothing to be excited about until then.

A stellar NHL career hard to ignore

Toews’ remarkable NHL career has been marred by several injuries and by the setting of several records that are still well known. His name is now permanently etched into the NHL ice, and he has temporarily departed the arena with a wealth of $119,362,195. The $84 million contract he signed with the Blackhawks in 2014 allowed him to commit fully to the organization and become a key component.

Toews has already proven himself as an ice hockey player, having won three Stanley Cups, the Conn Smythe Trophy, and two Olympic gold medals. The NHL superstar spent his entire 15-year career with the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring 372 goals and 883 points in 1067 regular-season games and another 45 goals and 119 points in 137 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He is widely regarded as one of the league’s finest leaders, and his Blackhawks squad is often regarded as one of the league’s most dominant in the last decade.
