The Washington Capitals are now 11th in the Eastern Conference and have a shot at making the Stanley Cup playoffs this season. The NHL team was originally part of the qualifying pool, but after some early jitters that led to a loss of confidence and subsequent expulsion, they were left out. The club’s Senior Vice President and General Manager recently announced a major agreement, extending the contract of star defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk by three years and providing him with an average annual salary of $3 million.
The Washington Capitals made the announcement on their official Instagram page. Given his importance to the team’s defense, Trevor van Riemsdyk’s contract extension is a significant decision by the organization.

The New Jersey native began his career as an NHL defenseman with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014–15 season. In the same year, he joined the Blackhawks for the first time and also won the Stanley Cup as a rookie. After that, he spent the 2017–18 season with the Carolina Hurricanes before signing with the Washington Capitals for the 2020–21 campaign. Trevor van Riemsdyk has suited up for 159 games with the Capitals since then. He has played in 67 games this season, scoring seven goals and dishing out 14 assists for 21 points to set a new career high at the age of 31. As van Riemsdyk can contribute offensively while being a defenseman, the Capitals made the proper move in extending his contract for a total of $9 million ($3 million per year).

Capitals VP/GM Brian MacLellan made the announcement of the three-year contract extension. MacLellan recognizes van Riemsdyk’s value to the team as he pushes for a record year. In the Instagram post, the Capitals wrote in the caption, saying, “THREE-V-R. The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a three-year contract extension. van Riemsdyk’s contract will carry an average annual value of $3 million.”
Is there still hope for the Washington Capitals?
The Washington Capitals have slid to 11th place in the Eastern Conference. If they want to compete for the Stanley Cup, they need to move up to the eighth spot. To advance to the postseason, the Capitals need to earn more points than the Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, and archrival Pittsburgh Penguins.

There is still over a month before the playoffs begin, but for the Capitals to make a comeback in the league, they will need to win a lot of games. The team’s morale benefits from these signings as a whole, but the players themselves benefit as well.
