Home/Olympics

The Boston Bruins have had a phenomenal season so far in the NHL. After beating the New York Rangers, 4–2, at the TD Garden, the team is on a ten-game winning streak. Tyler Bertuzzi, a recently acquired NHL player from the Detroit Red Wings, has caused a stir online because of an oddity involving his hockey stick.

Boston Bruins rookie Tyler Bertuzzi played in his first game tonight against the New York Rangers. The NHL superstar seemed excited, despite the fact that his previous club was not in the Stanley Cup qualifying pool. But now that the Bruins are enjoying such a great NHL season, Bertuzzi’s outlook has shifted dramatically, and he is even considering a run at the Stanley Cup. Pictures of Bertuzzi using a hockey stick without tape have recently gone viral.

Many ice hockey players get ready for a game by taping their hockey sticks in certain patterns. Hockey tape protects the blade, butt end, or shaft from damage and improves grip, providing a little edge on the ice. Taping the blade prevents it from wearing away, gives the player a stronger grip on the stick shaft, and lets them adjust the knob size to their hand. To keep the puck from sliding out of control, hockey tape may be wrapped over the blade to avoid the development of moisture and ice.

In addition to the Tyler update being reported by the Bruins Insider, several Bruins supporters on various social media platforms noticed this particular piece of gear. Even media celebrity Michael Hurley tweeted about it, calling it “The hockey stick that broke the internet.” No one has ever seen a hockey player use a stick without tape since it greatly improves the stick’s handling. But it seems like Tyler Bertuzzi has other intentions for it.
