As of now, the Edmonton Oilers are enjoying a successful NHL season, sitting pretty at sixth position in the Western Conference with 76 points. Even though they are in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the team’s performance against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday at the Canada Life Centre was so awful that fans were outraged. The Oilers gave it a good shot, but the Jets were out for vengeance after losing to them in their last match.
In recent times, angry fans took to the Edmonton Journal’s Facebook page to criticize the journal for failing to report on the team’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. But the Calgary Flames 0-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild was available online. Although the booing by Flames supporters was highlighted, Oilers fans were unhappy because they felt their team’s loss was glossed over.
Why fans were so dissatisfied?

Saturday’s win against the Winnipeg Jets ended a three-game losing streak for the Edmonton Oilers, but their comeback bid was short-lived since they played the Jets again, who were still irate about their loss the night before. In the first game, contested in Edmonton’s Rogers Place, the Oilers came out on top, defeating the visitors by a score of 6-3. In the third period, the Jets made a valiant effort to mount a comeback, but they ultimately fell short because of the passage of time. To exact their vengeance, the Winnipeg Jets defeated the visiting Edmonton Oilers 7-5 in their home arena, the Canada Life Centre.
The Oilers still have enough points (76) to avoid relegation despite the loss. Yet the Colorado Avalanche and the Winnipeg Jets are just two points behind them, and supporters know that if the Oilers don’t play well in their next games, they’ll slip in the standings and have a hard time making the playoffs. Fans are aware of the Oilers’ stellar reputation since Wayne Gretzky, widely considered the greatest player of all time, spent nine seasons with the team and helped them win four Stanley Cups. Since the team represents Edmonton’s pride, its success is of paramount importance to the city’s fervent fanbase. And, as the loss wasn’t covered, the fans immediately called out the Edmonton Journal on their recent Facebook post.
The NHL fans just barged in
Only celebrating the team’s wins and not criticizing them for their bad performances is not what the Oilers fans want. Reporting just on the Calgary Flames game against the Minnesota Wild, in which Flames supporters have reportedly witnessed ‘booing,’ instead of the previous Oilers game, was a bad move for the Edmonton Journal. In no time at all, fans flooded the comment section of the journal’s Facebook post. Here are some comments to prove it.
One fan pointed out how the journal ignored the recent loss, saying, “Edmonton Journal deflecting an Oilers big L to the slumping Jets yesterday. Must be from the school of Liberals.” As Oilers fans don’t boo their team often, this user has left a comment for them, saying, “That’s one thing our Oilers fans don’t do is boo our team.”

Out of all the comments, according to this fan, not all Oilers fans boo, as they say, “Honest Edmonton fans can fully relate to this.” This fan just pointed out the major flaw of the club by leaving a cryptic comment that reads, “They got beat by a very good defensive team.”
