Home/Olympics

If you consider yourself a sports enthusiast, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the 40-yard dash. As its name implies, it is a sprint that takes place over a distance of 40 yards, or 36.576 meters. Scouts use it to measure the quickness and acceleration of American football players in preparation for the NFL Draft and college recruitment. The dash is not considered a legitimate track and field event by World Athletics either. However, only the National Football League (NFL) has officially recognized this ability for positions like running back, wide receiver, and defensive back. Most athletes can run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, but this former D1 runner has done it faster than the average.

Former D1 sprinter JT Butler went viral with a video he shared on his social media account. As the video gained popularity, legions of sports lovers descended on the video’s comment area to express their shock and disbelief.

The video’s popularity is well deserved. A typical NFL player would need at least 4.5 seconds to run 40 yards. JT Butler, however, was not in the mood to conform to the mold of a typical NFL player that day. In the clip, he can be seen getting into position for the 40-yard dash. Butler runs with undivided attention; he wasn’t slowed down by carrying a selfie stick.
