Surfers are often searching for the ideal wave for an experience of thrill. They throng to the beaches on the east coast, where the waves are always favorable for an exhilarating surfing spree. But, they must share the waters with the multitudinous marine life that calls the Atlantic Ocean home. Along those lines, the surfers who dare to venture into the seas must keep their wits about them to return to the shore with all limbs intact.

Most surfers would think twice before entering the water, which is teeming with the ocean’s deadliest predators. However, one surfing pro has formed a unique relationship with these beasts to the extent that the sharks seemed to tolerate his presence. He knew of the grave danger waiting for him in the water that had recently left a 38-year-old man with serious injuries. But it did not break his resolve, and he stepped into the ocean with a strong purpose. What really went down during this unbelievably spooky tryst in the wild waters?

Spooky encounters with sharks while surfing

Michael Dunphy is a professional surfer from Florida with a wide portfolio of surfing achievements. He has spent countless hours riding the waves and exploring different surf spots around the world. This year, he is on a new adventure and has chosen New Smyrna Beach near Volusia County as the site for his latest surfing escapades. When Dunphy entered the water, he immediately encountered a baby shark swimming close to the shore. As he surfed further, more of these deadly mini predators appeared near him. He caught the whole experience on camera and uploaded it as a YouTube short with the caption, “Florida sharks everywhere”.

The sharks were curious about Dunphy and came close to his surfboard to inspect if he was predator or prey. This brave East Coast surfer remained unfazed by their presence for a long time, seeing that the baby sharks were easily spooked. However, a bone-chilling incident soon ended the surfing session abruptly.

Michael Dunphy’s narrow escape

At one point during the video, Michael Dunphy came close to a shark attack. He remarked at the close shave, saying, “Almost just got bit”. The daredevil man had some experience of how it feels when a shark sinks its teeth into the flesh. He had suffered a harrowing shark attack while surfing in Florida’s Cocoa Beach last year. After the attack, Dunphy had said, “It came up [and] he bit on my foot”.

He did not want to risk it the second time and left the water before things went wrong. In a previous surfing session at New Smyrna Beach some time back, Michael Dunphy had a similar close call with a shark that came after his toes while he was paddling out to sea. Since the last incident did not dissuade him from taking on such huge risks, this new one probably won’t either. Suffice it to say, we have not heard the last of him yet.
