Equestrian activities are relatively unpopular in East Africa, but Kenya has emerged as a regional powerhouse. Showjumper Muthoni Kimani, 19, hopes to compete in the Olympics someday. The Kenyan equestrian enthusiast faced significant challenges, but she was bolstered by the love and encouragement of her parents.
In a video interview, Kimani discussed the difficulties she and her family faced in order to pursue this sport at the global level. The enormous sum of Sh 50,000,000 (Kenyan shillings), or around $362,976, that she spent on preparations for an international event was not a small price to pay.

Muthoni Kimani faces several challenges on her path to the Olympic Games as an equestrian. It was already difficult for the 19-year-old since equestrian sports are not widely practiced in Kenya and other African nations. Kimani mentions in the video how expensive it is for her family to register for major equestrian contests (about $12,000). Her family, however, remains unwavering in their support, since they believe she has what it takes to compete at the highest levels and earn a medal for Kenya at the Olympics. The equestrian threw light on her journey in the video uploaded to the Hot 96 FM YouTube channel, in February 2023.
Kimani’s mother was also invited to the discussion, and she provided some further context regarding the equestrian community. According to her mother, the whole cost of the preparations was around Sh50,000,000, or about $362,976. She does note, however, that the prize fund of roughly Sh256,000,000 (approximately $1,800,000) makes the entry fee worthwhile. They also emphasize that the Kenyan government should provide its support as well, as the initiative stands to reap many benefits for the nation.
The ‘Superwoman’ behind the emerging showjumper
Without her loving and encouraging parents, Muthoni Kimani’s life might have been quite different. Kimani’s parents have gone so far as to sell their property in order to provide the financial backing she needs to pursue her dream of competing in the Olympics. Kimani’s mother, who remains unnamed, has been instrumental in her success. She also gave up her career as a hairstylist to focus solely on her daughter’s dreams.

Kimani began riding horses when she was just three years old. She took to the sport immediately and easily, starting her competitive career at the tender age of seven. At the age of 14, she began competing in showjumping competitions. She embraced each injury, and each financial obstacle, throughout her career, continuing to pursue her dreams. So much so, that Ababu Namwamba, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Sports, met with her and gave his full support.
