The ultimate goal for horses and their trainers worldwide is to triumph in a Grade 1 stakes race. Trainers would do everything to take home that kind of money, but perhaps more importantly, the increased interest in their horses among equestrian enthusiasts would do wonders for their businesses. The recent Belmont Oaks was a once-in-a-lifetime event for Aspen Grove, ridden by Oisin Murphy and trained by James Stack. The Irish horse finished the 1 1/4-mile circle in impressive fashion for her maiden race on American soil, pleasing both the crowd and her rider and trainer.

The winner of the 2023 Belmont Oaks Invitational was declared via a series of viral films shared across different social media sites. The filly’s meteoric rise to fame is a testament to the notoriety gained by winning a Grade 1 stakes race.

An amazing equestrian feat

The horses themselves are the true athletes in the sport of horse racing. The last of all the horses to be put into the trove was the Irish horse. Prerequisite and Be Your Best fought tooth and nail in the first quarter leading up to the halfway point of the 1 1/4-mile circle. Be Your Best, however, was unable to maintain its position in the last quarter of the circuit, and the race came down to Prerequisite and Mission of Joy. But Aspen Grove came charging out of the middle and finished in an impressive 2:04.09, cutting short the leaders’ pursuit for first place.

Aspen Grove finished first in the Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes (Grade 1). The jockey, Oisin Murphy, commented on how the filly began the race a “little slowly” compared to the other American thoroughbred horses, but how she literally flew around the final turn. The jockey “was very happy” with the end outcome. James Stack, the horse’s trainer, was also thrilled by the performance, and he praised the rider for his obvious rapport with the filly.

The horse has gained $275,000 and is now eager to continue her racing career in the United States.

Diving deep into her career

Aspen Grove is expected to remain in North America after this victory and go for the forthcoming Saratoga Oaks Invitational (G3) on August 4 or the Del Mar Oaks (G1) on August 19. The filly broke her maiden on August 27, 2022, in the Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF Stakes (Gr. 3). The filly has run in various races since then, but she has never come close to winning.

The filly’s worst result was tenth in the Tattersalls Irish One Thousand Guineas (Gr. 1) until her recent victory in the American Grade 1 event. Despite the doubters’ concerns, she won the Belmont Oaks, raising her earnings to $318,652, and plans to pursue a career in American horse racing.
